Splitting a clip divides it into two separate clips at the playhead position. This is useful for removing parts of a clip, adding content in the middle, or adjusting timing.

Split a clip

  1. Select the clip you want to split in the timeline.

  2. Move the playhead to the exact position where you want to cut.

  3. Use one of these methods to split:

  • Press S on your keyboard

  • Click the Split button (scissors icon) in the timeline toolbar

  • Right-click the clip and select Split

The clip is cut into two adjacent clips at the playhead position.

Split multiple clips at once

To split multiple clips at the same time:

  1. Hold Shift and click to select multiple clips in the same section.

  2. Position the playhead where you want to cut.

  3. Press S or use the Split button.

All selected clips are split at the same position.

After splitting

Once a clip is split, you can:

  • Delete one half of the split clip

  • Move one part to a different position

  • Insert new content between the two parts

  • Apply different effects or settings to each part

Undo a split

Press Cmd/Ctrl + Z to undo the split immediately. You can also use the Undo button in the timeline toolbar.

If you split multiple clips at once, undo will reverse all splits together.

Tips

  • Use the playhead preview to find the exact frame before splitting.

  • Splits are aligned to the project frame rate for precise cuts.

  • You cannot split a clip at the very beginning or end—place the playhead somewhere in the middle.

  • The S shortcut only works when you are not typing in a text field.
