Timeline overview

Learn how the timeline works.

Written by Anton Koenig

The timeline is where you compose every asset in your video. It is organized into sections, layers, and assets. Sections contain layers, and layers contain assets.

Layers

Within each section, content is stacked in layers. The base visual layer typically sits at the bottom; overlay and audio layers appear above it. That lets you combine footage, images, text, and other asset types in the same timeframe.

Vertical layer order sets visual stacking: assets in a higher layer render in front of assets in lower layers on the preview canvas. If you cannot see an asset in the preview, it may be covered by assets in a layer above.

Playhead

The playhead marks your current position in the video. Drag it to scrub through the timeline, or click anywhere in a section to jump to that moment. During playback, the playhead moves automatically.

Timeline toolbar

The timeline toolbar provides quick access to common actions:

  • Insert — insert assets at the current time

  • Split — split the selected asset at the playhead

  • Delete — remove the selected asset, layer, or section

  • Zoom (+/-) — adjust how much of the timeline is visible

  • Fit — zoom so the entire timeline fits on screen

  • Undo / Redo — step backward or forward through your edit history
